What kinds of assignments does Rakettitiede offer to its consultants?
Our consultants are guaranteed technically exciting and meaningful assignments. Are you curious about the variety of projects you might tackle with us? Below you can read three short stories about where our consultants have landed in their moon suits.
An assignment can refer to a project, a gig, an operation or a posting – you name it! At Rakettitiede, we have opted for the term ‘assignment’ even at the risk of sounding a bit formal. This is because our consultants don’t just do projects in the traditional sense; they become part of the client’s product development team and often also enjoy their gigs(!) for a relatively long time. – the current average being about two years. In other words, an assignment is nothing more and nothing less than the well-known bread and butter of consulting.
And do consultants have any say in choosing their assignments, we hear you ask. Absolutely! Our culture dictates that every rocket scientist gets to choose their placement and position. We’ve found that this approach keeps our developers enthusiastic, engaged and happy – and that’s when the magic happens.
What problems can our consultants solve? Do they leave a lasting impact on the client – or even society at large – through their assignments? Read what Jartza (rocket scientist #1), Nicoandres (rocket scientist #67) and Tuomas (rocket scientist #34) have to say and find out.
#1 Clever and inventive Poindexterism in client projects – and just for fun
Many people dream of working with something they feel passionate about. Jari ‘Jartza’ Tulilahti, rocket scientist #1 and an expert in embedded systems, says he’s living the dream. Known on the mothership for his fearless creativity and expertise in wares hard and soft, Jartza can assemble electronics and program everything from low-level driver code to user interfaces. His skillset encompasses PCB design, 3D printing and soldering as well as debugging electronics with tools like logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
“I love helping clients advance their development to new levels. It allows me to make a bigger impact on their business,” Jartza says.
In his Rocket career, Jartza has applied his skills in a variety of projects ranging from lifts, and sports watches to weather stations. “The best part of the gigs has been the way I’ve been able to combine my software and hardware expertise. Seeing my work in use around the world is a source of pride for me,” he says.

One of Jartza’s career highlights was crafting Proof of Concepts (PoCs) that the client just couldn’t resist putting into production. “The Rocket encourages us to learn new things and try out various solutions – even surprising ones. If I want to acquire electronic components to develop something new, either to better understand the customer’s problems or to learn something myself, it’s possible,” he says.
One story that underlines Jartza’s special skills as well as his passion for learning and PoCs is the creation of Tagsu, an electronic name tag Jartza developed in 2014. Tagsu came to life when Jartza, battling a cold, had to join the Rocket’s summer outing remotely while tinkering with his PoC at home. Little did anyone know his little creation would eventually hit the market.
#2 Big data hero and business lessons
“One of the best things about being a consultant is how much I can learn from different assignments,” says full-stack developer Nicoandres Rodriquez, rocket scientist #67.
In his current assignment, he’s part of the client’s advertising team, processing large amounts of data for ad optimisation. “I handle huge amounts of data from over 20 countries. Data analysis is crucial for targeting ads to the right audience,” he explains.
What have been Nicoandres’ main takeaways from this assignment? “I’ve learned how important high-quality software development can be for the client’s business,” he says. Advertising was uncharted territory for Nicoandres, but once he took the plunge, he couldn’t help but get excited about it.
“As consultants, we always focus on the value we can deliver to our clients.” – Nicoandres
“As consultants, we always focus on the value we can deliver to our clients. Even the best technical solutions aren’t effective if they don’t help achieve business goals. I’ve learnt to balance technical excellence with maximum business impact,” Nicoandres says.
#3 Successful match: consultants and long-lasting assignments
Sometimes, everything just clicks. In 2018, Tuomas Terho, rocket scientist #34, switched to consulting after a long career in various product houses.
“At first, I felt apprehensive and wondered whether I would be constantly hopping from one client to another. But my fears turned out to be completely unfounded. I’ve been lucky to work with the same client since day one, and they’ve wanted to keep me,” Tuomas says.
When Tuomas started with his first and current client, the goal was to finish the project in a year. However, Tuomas’ expertise in embedded systems as well as software, algorithms and hardware was needed for other products as well.
“For the past six years, I’ve honed my skills in tackling scientific challenges within the client’s industry, seamlessly integrating software and electronics. While I can’t spill all the secrets, I can share that my work involves products related to measuring air quality and weather phenomena,” Tuomas says.

What’s been the most interesting part of the assignment? “I’m keen on bridging the gap between the physical world and the programmatic functions of the equipment. I also love working with the client’s scientists. The work is a journey in continuous learning. I’ve settled in with the customer and delved deep into their world, which is extremely fascinating,” Tuomas says.
